Not new. Very not new. How not new is this? Look at a mechanical clock with weights, like a grandfather clock. This issue has always been internal friction. Having said that, this method of storing energy has a lot of advantages, its not chemical storage like a battery, it doesn't leak energy over time, gravity is pretty much constant. Its simple. I hope they make it work.
