Catcher in the Rye, I think you nailed it. A book whose relevance is trapped in the time for those trapped in that time. I read it in High School (70s), our teacher thought a lot more of it then we did. He was dismayed at our lack of awe. But it was a quick read, unlike Dhalgren.
