Back in the day, I did my own lense sharpness tests and quickly settled on two fixed (non-zoom) lenses. Recently I got back into photography and tested the kit zoom lense that came with the camera against my 20 yro fixed glass. Todays kit lenses are really really good and at the megapixel count I get with my camera, the glass not an issue.
